Description

The Women's Center is celebrating our 30th anniversary by learning about and engaging with the stars and planets. In astrology, the 30-year mark is when Saturn returns to the exact place in the zodiac that it occupied at the moment of a one's birth. This transit ushers in a time of transition, change, and coming-of-age. We invite our UMBC community of alumni and current students, staff, and faculty to honor this time of transition for our Women’s Center during Homecoming weekend.

As we look back on the past 30 years and move forward into the next 30 years and beyond, our guest speaker, astrologer, LiZhen who created Astrology for Social Movements will welcome us to consider what Saturn Returns means for the Women's Center and our community while also helping us explore other astrological meanings we can relate to our own personal lives.

This online homecoming will also feature a special birth chart reading of the Women’s Center. LiZhen will explore significant moments of the Women’s Center through a conversation with former and current Women's Center staff. Participants will also be invited to consider their own astrological signs and how they can help us examine and understand our purpose for social change and good for our community.

Since we're coming together at Homecoming, we'll also have time for our alumni and current students, faculty, and staff to mix and mingle and share stories and memories of their time in the Women's Center.

There will also be door prizes!

Current prizes participants have the chance to win include a copy of "You Were Born for This" by Chani Nicholas which was donated by Greedy Reeds and a UMBC Bookstore $50 giftcard which was donated by the Bookstore! We also have an original piece of stained glass artwork by queer local artist Juliette Seymour, '15, owner of Granddaughter of the Glass. Check out their work on Instagram @granddaughteroftheglass. Or, you could have the chance to win a handmade ceramic mug by local artist Keagan Yingling of Tombstoneware Ceramics. See more from Keagan at his Instagram @tombstonewareceramics! There's also a chance to win some yummy cupcakes from UMBC alum-owned Kupcakes and Co!

This event will take place on Webex on Friday, October 8th at 6pm (EST). We wish we could host this event in person and acknowledge for east coast folks this time falls during dinner. We invite you to plan ahead and bring your happy hour snacks and drinks or main course meal to the screen. Family and friends are also welcomed to attend with you!

Let us know if you’ll be joining us by complete this RSVP form (though we will still welcome you if regardless of your RSVP!). We’ll provide updates along the way to participants who RSVP early and all RSVPed participants will receive an online link to join us.

If you can’t join us and would still like to celebrate our 30th Anniversary with us, we still encourage you to complete the RSVP form where you can share your memories of the Women’s Center and upload any pictures you may have of your time in the Women’s Center. You can also consider sharing a gift through this link.
