A Roundtable Dialogue with invited panelists from UMBC Athletics:
Andi Goodwin, Chelsea Barker, Amy Slade, Kristina Miller, & Jessica Hammond-Graf


From the paradoxes of Title IX regulations and the glass (or turf) ceiling, to stereotypes facing women athletes and their various intersecting identities, this roundtable discussion will critically explore the successes, challenges, and experiences of women in sports. 


Panelist's Bios:

Andi Goodwin is a full-time academic advisor on the UMBC Athletics staff supporting men's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, and swimming and diving. Prior to joining the Retrievers' staff, Goodwin worked with the Baltimore Ravens for eight years in the organization's advertising, community relations, and ticketing operations departments. Goodwin attended the University of Florida to play soccer for the Gators. As a freshman, she became the first Gator rookie to earn NSCAA All-America Honors and was named the 1997 SEC Freshman of the Year. A co-captain as a senior in 2001, Goodwin was again selected to be on the All-American Team and was named the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year as well.

Chelsea Barker is the assistant coach on the UMBC women's basketball coaching staff. She's also a UMBC alum who played on the women's basketball team from 2007-2011. During her time with the program, UMBC earned an America East regular-season title and made it's first-ever trip to the WNIT. Following her playing days with the Retrievers, Barker earned a Master's of Education degree in counselor education from the University of Maine, where she served as the LGBT Coordinator and founded her own non-profit organization, Respect Differences.

Amy Slade is the head coach of UMBC's women's lacrosse team. She also served as the team's co-head coach and assistant coach. Slade played lacrosse in college with the University of Virginia and led the team to a national championship in 2004. She was a four-time All-American, she set an NCAA record by scoring a goal in 66 straight games, and also won the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation's best player in 2004. Slade was also a part of the U.S. National Team from 2002-2009 and was a member of the 2005 World Cup training team.

Kristina Miller is the assistant athletic trainer at UMBC working closely with the volleyball, softball, and field teams. Prior to coming to UMBC, she served as a certified athletic trainer for the United States Naval Academy, where she was the head trainer for the women's volleyball team and also asisted the women's lacrosse team in their athletic training efforts. Along with assisting certain sports teams, Miller was also responsible for the orthopedic assessment and therapeutic rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries sustained during military training.

Jessica Hammond-Graf is UMBC Athletics' Senior Woman Administrator/Senior Associate Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Well-Being while also serving as the academic advisor for the men's basketball team. Prior to her current role, Hammond-Graf served as Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services, she supervised and coordinated the student support services for UMBC's 19 varsity sports teams. She also played on the National Women's Rugby team.
