Description

Caring for Community is a core theme of Critical Social Justice week and the focus of this workshop, which features two UMBC Community Leadership graduates, Kiaron Bailey (MPS '21) & Annie Byrd (MPS '23), and program director Sally J. Scott (PhD). Kiaron is Operations Manager for the Center for Urban Health Equity at Morgan State University, and Annie is an Assistant Director at the UMBC Career Center and Director of Systems and Support Services for the Doula Alliance of Maryland.

Kiaron and Annie will describe how personal experience, reflective practice, classroom learning, and community partnerships shaped their social justice journeys during and after the Community Leadership Program. Participants will then break into small groups, facilitated by Kiaron, Annie, and Sally, to develop greater clarity about engaging in justice-oriented work while studying or working in a university context. Please join us to hear about Kiaron and Annie's journeys, and to share your questions and aspirations for community care and social justice.

This event is part of Critical Social Justice (CSJ) Week. CSJ is a campus-wide initiative dedicated to deepening our collective understanding of equity, inclusion, and community care. Through panels, workshops, and creative programming, CSJ Week invites students, staff, and faculty to engage in meaningful conversations about justice and belonging within and beyond the university.

Critical Social Justice has a history in the Women's, Gender, & Equity Center, and we are excited to bring back this work now within the Community & Culture unit in the Division of Institutional Equity.

This event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's nondiscrimination policy.
