UMBC's Kelly Cyr Receives Newman Civic Fellowship Award
UMBC junior Kelly Cyr has received the Newman Civic Fellowship Award from Campus Compact, a national coalition of university presidents that promotes civic engagement and social responsibility. The Newman Civic Fellows--137 students from 30 states--were selected based on their having invested themselves in finding solutions to social problems through service, research and advocacy. The fellowship program is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders. (Read Campus Compact's press release here).
Kelly, a biology major and future veterinarian, has done extensive work to protect and advocate for animals. She volunteers with Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Inc. (BARCS), and has recruited other UMBC students to her cause. Kelly has lived in the Shriver Living Learning Community, and has served as an officer with UMBC's Equestrian Club. She also participated in Baltimore Collegetown's LeaderShape, a regional leadership development program. (See Kelly's Real People Profile here).
Congratulations, Kelly!
