Real People Profiles: Kaitlin Smith

We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.

Name: Kaitlin Smith

Hometown:
Perryville, MD

Major: Media & Communication Studies with a Minor in American Studies

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A:
 Since Fall 2013

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A:
I am the President of the Student Events Board, as well as Vice President of Recruitment for PHA, and Vice President of Alumnae and Heritage for my sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. I also work as an Orientation Peer Advisor (OPA) and an Undergraduate Fellow in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A:  An advocate for involvement and enthusiast of meaningful conversation.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A:    I like that no matter what role I am in I can connect back to other things that I either have been or am currently involved in.  I love the fact that working in admissions I talk about getting involved and going to events on campus to hundreds of people, but when I see someone from orientation has joined (seb) or greek life it makes me so happy because they are enjoying things that I I love and enjoy too.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:
Jason Loviglio, the Chair of the MCS Department told my class on my first day of freshman year something along the line of 'Take classes in subjects that you will enjoy, take classes in something that you are so passionate about that you annoy your family during Thanksgiving Dinner.'  This is something that time and time again I find myself thanking him for saying.  Find something that you're passionate about, and that you're good at, for me that was studying social representations in media but also making sure that I was involved in groups that care about my goals, and my voice as well.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A:
Currently in my role as in (seb), we are working on creating a better more cohesive form of collaborations specifically with cultural organizations within campus programming. UMBC offers a wonderful place to learn about other cultures and we are trying to improve that process through partnering to create successful campus events.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Bingewatching tv shows, to-do lists and coffee.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A:  One of the greatest things about being involved is that you get so much free stuff, when I joined greek life and (seb) I decreased my meal plan because I was getting so much free food, also the (seb) office and greek room are my two favorite places on campus.
