Job Announcement: Tenure-track position in TESOL

The Department of Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education is seeking applicants for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of English Language Learners in PK-12 schools and Second Language Education starting August 2017. This position is in the tenure stream and requires research, graduate teaching, and advising duties.
Candidates must have earned a doctorate by August 2017 in one of the following areas: TESOL/ESL/Second Language Education, Applied Linguistics with an emphasis in second language acquisition and pedagogy related to the education of English Language Learners in K-12 settings. The successful candidate also must have: 1) a promising and clearly defined research agenda in the area of English Language Learners in PK-12 classrooms; 2) an established or emerging record of publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals; 3) a record of external grant funding or potential to compete for external funding; 4) knowledge of the social, political, and historical circumstances involved in the education of English language learners, and 5) evidence of, or a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring graduate students. Applicants must also possess knowledge of linguistically and culturally responsive pedagogy grounded in principles of equity and content-based pedagogies grounded in bi/multilingual and applied linguistic research. Strong proficiency in English is required and proficiency in a language other than English is recommended.
Responsibilities include teaching graduate courses in the department’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Master of Education (MEd) (both face-to-face and on-line) programs to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers for instruction in linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms. Experience teaching online and developing online courses, an interest in innovative approaches to online education, and experience in second language testing and assessment are preferred. In addition to instruction in the MAT and MEd programs, the candidate must be able to provide doctoral student research mentoring in the area of English Language Learners as part of the Language Literacy, and Culture PhD and EdD programs. The successful applicant also needs to have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, both within and outside the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education and possess strong communication and organizational skills. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
