Real People Profiles: Katie Murray

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: A year and a half
A: I am truly passionate about making the transition a smooth process for new students and their families. In my first year at UMBC, I was able to redesign the Family Handbook. We turned it into a calendar with useful dates as well as resources for family members. It is important to make sure the family members are viewed as partners in their student's transition to UMBC. The calendar even won a national award from the Associate for Orientation, Retention, and Transition (NODA).

A: We have a cool UMBC photo collage in the Admissions office that is made up of photos from each decade. In the mural from the 1970's, we had to cover up a streaker's rear end - definitely a sign of the times!

A: Associate Director for Recruitment, Events, and Orientation within the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I help students apply and showcase UMBC through events and completing orientation.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: While I love visiting high schools, creating a great campus visit experience, and designing communications for our prospective students, I LOVE new student orientation. There is something about working with the OPAs and making all of the new students feel at home that is truly satisfying.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: While at UMBC, I have learned that everyone here is driven. Everyone from students to faculty to staff - UMBC creates an environment that allows you to passionate about your interests and do something with that passion! That makes UMBC such an exciting place to work and go to school.
Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: My dog, Kermit, Baltimore sports teams, baking, and running (I run so I can eat!).
