Real People Profiles: Corryn Wheatley

We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.

Name: Corryn Wheatley

Hometown: Walkersville, MD

Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology B.S., Psychology B.A.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: Since Fall 2012.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: I am the one of the Networking representatives for the UMBC chapter of the American Chemical Society. I am also a Learning Assistant for Chem 101 and Chem 102.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Chemistry loving runner girl, all around nerdy coffee enthusiast.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love helping out all of the students with chemistry in and out of the classroom, it gives me lots of warm-fuzzies to know I'm actually helping fellow students learn. Helping with our ACS chapter is also immensely satisfying. Being able to help organize, promote, and attend events geared toward spreading the love of science and chemistry is something I'm very passionate about.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A:
The most memorable thing I have learned since coming to UMBC is that I am capable of way more than I ever thought possible. I never used to be a risk taker and I was always very shy and quiet. Now I am much more comfortable really putting myself out there and trying things I never even would have considered 3 years ago!

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: I have been selected for unique opportunity this summer where I will be embarking on a 4,000+ mile cross-country run from San Francisco, CA to Baltimore, MD. This trip is organized through the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adult’s 4K for Cancer program. As one of 180 total college students that will be a part of one of six separate trips; San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Baltimore, and New York, I have accepted the challenge to raise over $4500 before we are able to hit the road this summer. Our mission is to raise awareness, unite communities, and inspire hope towards the eradication of cancer. We will be visiting cancer patients at hospitals and cancer centers, as well as raising awareness about Ulman Cancer Fund’s mission in the towns we stop in during our trek across the country.

My dad has been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma for the past 10 years which is only one of the reasons why this trip is so meaningful to me. I am so passionate about this trip and everything it encompasses. I have recently begun talking to my teammates and I'm getting more excited everyday!

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Batman, coffee, napping, and the Oxford Comma.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: As a commuter, I like to nap in the big cushy chairs in library and any other time I'm usually hiding in one of the nooks in the Meyerhoff building. I have a favorite parking spot too, but that's a secret!
