Real People Profiles: Yoo-Jin Kang

We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.

Name: Yoo-Jin Kang

Hometown:
Ellicott City, MD

Major:
MLL: Language and Cultural Studies & Interdisciplinary Studies (Studying Violence)

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This will be my fourth and final year here at UMBC!

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: I am a staff member of the Women's Center as well as the chapter president of Phi Mu Fraternity for Women. I am also a Peer Health Educator and Relationship Violence Prevention Advocate!

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: I serve as an advocate and enthusiast for topics worth talking about.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I truly enjoy the vibrant, smart, and passionate people that I have the privilege of knowing at UMBC- both students and staff. I love being able to be involved in various student organizations and courses where I am able to consider diverse perspectives and meet all kinds of people with similar values.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Seek first to understand and never be afraid to ask questions and try something new (and maybe scary!). My time here has taught me the value of taking risks, asking for help and guidance, and being open and willing to learn from and with others. The most important way to open up to growth and change is to let go of past-held restrictions and assumptions.

Q: What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?

A: One way that I believe I've worked with others to make a positive different at UMBC is through my combined efforts working with the Peer Health Educators group, the Relationship Violence Prevention Advocates group, and the Women's Center. Through tabling events, health programs, photo campaigns, and collaboration events, such as Take Back the Night, I believe that I have been a part of a group voice on campus that advocates for and values safe, healthy, and respectful relationships and communities. For me, that is invaluable and has the potential to make a difference in many people's lives.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Frozen Dark Chocolate.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: Some of my favorite moments at UMBC have included being a tour guide, being a part of the Greek Community, attending Humanities Forums and events, taking advantage of the free events and treats on campus, and, most surprisingly being featured on the UMBC website (psst- by the way, I'm actually looking at a math book!)
