Scenes from Convocation (Photos)

by David Hoffman

Craig Berger and I had the pleasure of leading the procession of new UMBC students from the Albin O. Kuhn Library across campus to the Retriever Activities Center for today's Convocation. Here is some of what we and Student Life social media intern Dina Trembisky saw.

Members of the faculty and staff greeted new students at the
Retriever Activities Center doors.

Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of Students
Diane Lee quoted from 'The Banjo' by Robert Winner:
"Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance through partitions! Dance
through stairwells, envelopes, telephones!"
Provost Philip Rous quoted undergraduate Briana Hall on academic
integrity: "Be the blueprint for your own academic excellence, rather than
a copy of someone else's. The value of an original blueprint will always
exceed that of a copy, and the mere fact that you sit here today
already speaks volumes to how valuable you are, and how
excellent you are destined to be."

SGA President Jeffrey Kee talked about his journey to seriousness
of purpose.
Professor Manil Suri joked that he was not looking at his notes
because it was only fair that he take a "closed-book exam."
Senior Hallie Carter gave a shout out to her supporters from the Women's
Volleyball team, and discussed the importance of involvement.

President Freeman Hrabowski: "Watch your character, for it becomes your
destiny."
Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young led the UMBC
pinning ceremony.

Every great UMBC tradition involves free food ...
