Real People Profiles: Katie Cano
We're asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my second semester at UMBC.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Currently, I'm president of Erickson's Community Action Board, a Peer Review Council Board Member, a BreakingGround grant recipient, a volunteer at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents, a member of the Shriver Living-Learning Floor, a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar, and this summer I will be an Orientation Peer Advisor.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: A vessel for positive change--on campus and in the surrounding community.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I'm from Southern Maryland where there aren't too many different kinds of people; going home now is like culture shock after living at UMBC. So the thing that I enjoy the most within all of my roles at UMBC is the ability to learn things about different cultures, to be exposed to new opinions, to hear unfamiliar stories, and to see how it is to take a walk in someone else's shoes.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I like to talk. I like to talk all the time about anything to pretty much everyone. However, I've learned that I will gain much more if I just listen, rather than running my mouth all the time. So I've learned to talk less and listen much more.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Cross-stitching and Law and Order: SVU.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I do embarrassing things on a daily basis, but since I live on campus, I have the ability to do embarrassing things in front of many people now. For example, when I tripped up the stairs, out of my shoes, and practically kicked some poor boy in the face in the Commons. Or when I walked into a brick wall when I was going into Academic IV the other day. I've found that sometimes it's safer for everyone for me to stay in my room, cross-stitch, and watch hours of Taboo with my roommate on the weekends.
