Urban Institute Equity Scholars Program

Apply by June 1, 2021

The unequal effects of the pandemic on communities of color and the continued disparities in access to justice and basic needs have highlighted the persistent impact of structural racism permeating our society. In recent months, the Urban Institute has escalated its efforts to provide timely, evidence-based research and analysis to inform policy and advance racial equity. Towards this goal, Urban is launching its Equity Scholars program offering emerging and established scholars the opportunity to deepen their own research on race, equity, and/or structural racism while contributing to equity-focused analyses underway at Urban.

Over two years, Equity Scholars will have the opportunity to:

  • Embed in one of Urban’s policy centers and develop and execute research with colleagues in that center.
  • Partner with the director of Urban’s soon to be launched Office of Race and Equity Research to support research on race and equity taking place across Urban’s policy centers and through our Racial Equity Analytics Lab.
  • Work to build bodies of work on areas of specific interest.
  • Write and publish scholarly papers, op-eds, Urban Wire blog posts, or other research products in collaboration with Urban colleagues.
  • Organize two or more events per year for Urban colleagues and/or external audiences.
Equity Scholars will join Urban as members of a cohort of several scholars seeking to increase the impact of their research, help Urban deepen understanding of the effects of structural racism on people and places, and offer evidence-based solutions to advance racial equity.
