[Free]dom Fridays are designed to provide a virtual space to have an open dialogue about social justice and identity-based topics with other participants.
The recent removal of Christopher Columbus statues across the nation has made some people question “Why are people mad at Columbus?” and “Why should I care?” This Freedom Friday will focus on these removals in connection with the recent uprisings to further racial justice in the United States. Join us as we explore the history of American colonialism, connection to late 19th/early 20th century Italian immigration, the romanticization of Columbus, the erasure and genocide of Indigenous peoples across the Americas, and how it contributes to upholding White supremacy.
