Title: Language, Literacy and Culture
This graphic presents a step-by-step pathway of a doctoral student’s progression in the Language, Literacy and Culture, or LLC, program. The layout is a winding path from top to bottom, ending in graduation.
Top Section
This is labeled Pre-candidacy with 33 credits of coursework:
The first stage is labeled “Pre-candidacy” and requires a total of 33 credits. This includes:
12 credits of required “core” courses
21 credits of specialization and methodology courses
A comprehensive exam worth 3 credits
Middle Section
After completing coursework, students:
- Complete a proposal seminar worth 3 credits
- Assemble committee members
- Defend their proposal
- Students file for candidacy.
Candidacy Stage:
Students in candidacy must complete at least 18 credits of LLC 899 which are dissertation research credits.
Final Section of Dissertation Defense:
During this phase, students complete several administrative and academic steps:
- File nomination of committee form (6 months before defense)
- File announcement and readiness to defend forms with the Graduate School
- Defend the dissertation
- Complete any necessary revisions
- File approval sheet
- Upload the dissertation
End Point is Graduation:
The pathway ends with graduation, represented by a graduation cap icon.
